It is a big week for the Apple ecosystem. With Release Candidates already in the hands of developers, iOS 26.5 is widely predicted to drop tomorrow, May 11th, or later this week.
If you’re an iPhone user, we recommend checking your software updates regularly from tomorrow evening. Here is exactly what is coming in this version and why it matters.
1. End-to-End Encryption for RCS
This is arguably the most significant security enhancement in this release. While Apple recently adopted RCS (Rich Communication Services) to improve texting with Android users, this update adds End-to-End Encryption. This ensures that messages sent between iOS and Android are fully secure, bringing cross-platform privacy up to the standard we expect in 2026.
2. Localised Ads in Apple Maps
Apple is beginning to monetize its navigation app. Starting this summer in the US and Canada – with more countries expected to follow – users will start seeing suggested places and localised advertisements within Maps. When you search for a coffee shop or a supermarket, you’ll likely see sponsored results tailored to your location.
3. Pride Luminance Collection
To celebrate LGBTQ+ communities worldwide, Apple is releasing the Pride Luminance wallpaper and Apple Watch face. It’s a stunning, vibrant design that is highly customisable, allowing you to select a specific combination of colours to suit your style.
UK Enhancements & More
For our readers in the UK, this update also brings expanded third-party device support, making it easier to integrate non-Apple hardware into your ecosystem. We’re also expecting the usual round of bug fixes and performance “under-the-hood” tweaks.
Looking Ahead: iOS 27 & WWDC
While 26.5 is the immediate focus, the tech world is already looking toward June 8th. That is when WWDC officially kicks off, and we expect the grand reveal of iOS 27.
The event will be streamed live on YouTube (starting around 6:00 PM UK time), and the rumours are massive. The headline act? An all-new, “Smarter Siri” that is predicted to feature deep Google Gemini integration. This could fundamentally change how we interact with our phones.
Stay tuned – we’ll be covering the WWDC highlights and everything you need to know about iOS 27 right here in The Radar.
